What is a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR)?
A Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is a 10-digit number issued by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) to identify you for tax purposes in the United Kingdom. It is mainly used when dealing with Self Assessment tax returns.
Think of it as your personal tax identification number with HMRC. You usually receive a UTR when you:
Register for Self Assessment
Become self-employed
Set up a limited company
Register certain partnerships, trusts or estates with HMRC
Your UTR stays the same for life, even if you change jobs or move house.
What Does a UTR Look Like?
A UTR is typically a 10-digit number, for example: 1234567890
This number is automatically assigned when HMRC creates your tax record.
Why Do You Need a UTR?
You may need your UTR if you:
File a Self Assessment tax return
Work as a sole trader or freelancer
Run a limited company
Register under the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS)
Work with an accountant who submits your taxes
Without a UTR, HMRC cannot link your tax return or payments to your record.
How to Get a UTR Number
The easiest way to get a UTR is by registering for Self Assessment.
Step 1: Register with HMRC
Register online through GOV.UK: https://www.gov.uk/register-for-self-assessment
You should register if you:
Became self-employed
Need to submit a tax return
Have additional income not taxed automatically
Step 2: Wait for HMRC to Send Your UTR
Once registered, HMRC usually sends your UTR by post to the address you used during registration within about 15 days. It may take longer if you live outside the UK.
Where Can I Find My UTR?
If you already have one, you can find your UTR in several places:
Your Personal Tax Account
The HMRC mobile app
Previous Self Assessment tax returns
HMRC letters such as notices to file or payment reminders
If you still cannot find it, HMRC can send it to you by post after confirming your identity.
Does Everyone in the UK Have a UTR?
No. You only receive a UTR if you are registered for Self Assessment.
For example:
Person | UTR Needed? |
PAYE employee only | Usually no |
Self-employed worker | Yes |
Company director filing Self Assessment | Yes |
Landlords declaring rental income | Usually yes |
Common Questions About UTR
How long does it take to get a UTR?
Usually about 10–15 days after registering for Self Assessment.
Can I get my UTR online instantly?
No. HMRC normally sends it by post for security reasons. However, once issued, you can view it through:
Your Personal Tax Account
The HMRC app
Is a UTR the same as a National Insurance number?
No.
UTR | National Insurance Number |
Used for Self Assessment tax | Used for employment and benefits |
10 digits | Combination of letters and numbers |
Issued by HMRC for tax records | Issued by DWP for social contributions |
