Who We Are
Us? We’re Jen and John Gates - the accounting world’s answer to Ross & Rachel. And we’ve just added some more Friends to the team.
We're a husband & wife-led business and we're both chartered accountants based in Leamington Spa.
Duo Accountants began as an idea in 2020 while we worked at opposite sides of our dining table during lockdown. We officially began on 1 January 2021.
Here's a little bit about us...
🙋♀️ Jen is from Warwickshire and she's always wanted to become an accountant. We even found it written in her primary school workbook!
🙋♂️ John is from Devon and never planned to become an accountant, he actually trained to be an archaeologist. 🗿
🎓 We met at university when we were just 19
💍 We've been married for almost 10 years
🐈 🐈 🐈 We have 6 cats! 🐈 🐈 🐈
It's not just the two of us at Duo Accountants, we've got a fabulous team on our side who help us support all our amazing clients.
Maia is from South Africa 🇿🇦 and now lives in the UK. Apart from the weather, she loves it here.
Maia was our first employee and we're pleased to say we made a fantastic choice bringing her onboard. She supports Jen with the more technical areas of tax and accounting.
🇵🇭 Clarissa & Carla both live in the Philippines and are newbies to Team Duo but bring with them a wealth of experience in accounting & bookkeeping. Despite being 8 hours ahead of us in the UK we always find time to catch up as a team.

Although the majority of our clients are based in Leamington Spa, our online way of working allows us to work with anyone, anywhere.
How We Work
In simple terms, you can sum us up as being friendly and informal. No Dear this or Kind Regards that.
We talk to our clients as if we're having a chat in a cafe. We want you to feel at ease and relaxed when talking with us.
Feeling intimidated by your accountant can prevent you reaching out when you need help and we're always on hand to help you. We actively encourage our clients to contact us anytime they need help.
How We Operate
We’re a fully digital accountancy practice, we don’t do paperwork, ever!
But don't fret! If you’re not already using software (or even a spreadsheet) to get on top of your finances then we’ll help you get started, giving you guidance and instructions every step of the way.
One of the biggest hurdles to getting started with a new software is understanding how to use it. We’re small business owners too, we get it. You try to use some new software to make your life easier but instead you spend countless hours trying to figure out how to use it.
That’s why we’ve developed training and instructional videos on everything you could want to do on your accounting software so just just hit the play button and away you go. And if there’s something extra you want to do, we’ll just record a video for you on how to do it.
It’s all about the videos
Videos are a huge part of how we work and communicate with you. When it comes to explaining your tax return or company accounts, we’ll send you a video talking you through all the numbers in an easy-to-understand way.
Why do we do this? Well for starters, most of the information we need to communicate is just too complicated to articulate over email and quite frankly, if an email is more than a few sentences long, we all just switch off anyway.
Secondly, we recognise that when we’re working, so are you! This means you don’t always have time to drop what you’re doing, cancel a class or close the shop just to talk to your accountant. That’s why we send you a video so you can watch it in your own time when it’s convenient for you. Once you’ve watched it, you can book in a call to talk through it if you have any questions.
How we charge our fees
We work on fixed fees agreed up-front. You will never get a bill from us that you weren’t expecting or hadn’t already agreed upon.
We would never buy from a business without knowing the costs upfront and that’s why we lay out all the costs up front to you too, no hidden fees.
